Grand Coulee Dam, concrete gravity dam:
Washington leads the United States in the production of hydroelectric power. A majority of this power comes from six dams along the Columbia River, the most famous of which is Grand Coulee Dam in east central Washington, built during 1933-42 as part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. Grand Coulee Dam measures 168 m (550 ft) high and 1272 m (4173 ft) long and ranks as one of the largest and most powerful hydroelectric installations in the world. It is used for flood control, river regulation, irrigation, and power production; its hydroelectricity-generating capacity, which totaled nearly 6.5 million kw by the end of the 1980s, makes it one of the world's greatest hydroelectric installations. The Columbia once had great numbers of salmon and supported a large canning industry; the fish stock was severely depleted in the 1900s as a result of dam construction and pollution.
